Yorkshire lawyers box clever as offices play starring role in award-winning movie
LEEDS law firm has taken on a starring role in a setting with a difference – an award-winning movie.
Film crews zoomed in on Milners solicitors’ city centre headquarters as a location for the British boxing comedy drama Gloves Off, starring Ricky Tomlinson and Denise Van Outen.
The movie, which staged its celebrity world premiere at Leicester Square in London, is released to the public this week.
It won Best Feature Film in this year’s British Independent Film Festival awards, while Steven Nesbit – who co-wrote the script – was nominated for Best Director.
Milners’ managing partner Simon Bass said: “It was great to play host to the film crew and cast, and see first-hand what goes on behind-the-scenes on a movie set.
“Even though we have boxed clever on behalf of our clients since Milners was born in Leeds 125 years ago, moving from our usual court setting to the box office in this way signalled a new development for us.
“From our 15th floor headquarters at Whitehall Waterfront, we have a panoramic view of Leeds – and it was this unique location which attracted the production team to us.”
The movie, which was heavily shot in Leeds, also stars co-writer Brad Moore, Alexei Sayle, Paul Barber, Laurie Kynaston, and Alan Ford.
It follows the story of Doug who, after the sudden death of his trainer during his championship fight, has inherited a crumbling debt-ridden gym, packed with a mixed bag of crazy would-be boxers.
He must raise £50,000 fast or risk watching his mentor’s legacy repossessed and transformed into a pilates parlour for stock brokers. Doug agrees to train a gypsy woman’s brother to fight in a £100,000 winner-takes-all bare-knuckle contest against the “King of The Gypsies”.
Gloves Off was released On Demand this week with a DVD launch planned on the 1 October.
