Sue Ryder cycle events raise over £15,000

Manorlands’ cycle events group is celebrating the end of another successful season of sportive and mountain bike challenges with this summer’s events having raised a total of more than £15,000 for the Oxenhope Sue Ryder hospice.

Supported by Yorkshire cycling retailer All Terrain Cycles which has superstores in Saltaire and Wetherby, the annual series of cycling challenges finished on Sunday 16 September with 230 riders taking part in the Bronte Mountain Bike Challenge, despite the rain.

Sunday’s event raised £8,500 towards the total with Louise Seal becoming the first woman to win the 21.9 mile ‘Emily’ crossing the finish line sponsored by Colin Appleyard Ltd with a time of 3 hours and 37 minutes. Local lad Tim Small of Bingley also put in an impressive performance, coming first in the longest ride, the 35.1 mile ‘Heathcliff’, having taken part in the challenge since he was a child, riding the shorter routes.

The Bronte MBT Challenge followed the popular Bronte Sportive in July.

Andrew Wood of Sue Ryder said: “It has been another great summer of cycling and I’d like to thank everyone who’s been involved, from our sponsor All Terrain Cycles to the many volunteers who helped run the events. You all did a great job and without you all we wouldn’t be able to have the events, raise so much for a great cause and allow all those crazy people to enjoy the wonderful local countryside in the way that they do!

“With the 2018 cycling events now, over we are really keen to hear from any people that want to make their dream cycling challenge come true in 2019.”

All Terrain Cycles have once again provided a mystery bike-related prize for the winner of a free draw for all entrants who raised more than £50 in sponsorship, as well as making a donation for each rider from the All Terrain race team who took part in the events.

Every year, the events attract hundreds of cyclists from across the UK with all proceeds, including entrance fees and sponsorship, being used to fund Sue Ryder’s care for people living with incurable illness in West Yorkshire.

Tony Booth, managing director of All Terrain Cycles, says: “The Sue Ryder events have established a loyal following among the cycling fraternity and it’s great to see enthusiasts at all levels enjoy some of the most beautiful and challenging routes Yorkshire has to offer. Now in their 14th year, the challenges have once again raised an amazing amount for a vital local charity and we’re proud to be part of it.”
