Plans revealed for two new ‘state-of-the-art’ buildings at Leeds General Infirmary

Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has unveiled plans for a huge new hospital development in the city.

The proposals, revealed this morning (October 17), will transform Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) with two new two state-of-the-art hospital buildings, including a Children’s Hospital.

It is part of Hospitals of the Future, a long-term vision for the LGI that aims to revolutionise the health services available in Leeds and the surrounding region.

The first of the new buildings will join onto the LGI’s Jubilee Wing. Its facilities will include a new theatre suite for day case procedures, endoscopy and radiology services, and an outpatients department with services like pharmacy.

The second, the new Leeds Children’s Hospital, will bring together staff and services from the existing children’s hospital at the LGI’s Martin and Clarendon wings.

Julian Hartley, chief exec of Leeds Teaching Hospitals, said: “This is a really exciting development for our hospitals that will be a huge step forward in the way we provide healthcare for patients in Leeds and the wider region.

“By designing hospital buildings from the ground up, we’ll be able to embrace new technologies and innovation to deliver modern, efficient health services that are tailored to our patients’ needs, not just now but in the future.”

Leeds City Council Leader Cllr Judith Blake commented: “It is fantastic for everyone in Leeds and the wider region to see these exciting plans to transform the Leeds General Infirmary site with state-of-the-art hospital buildings coming forward for consideration.”

If approved, the development will position Leeds General Infirmary at the centre of the city’s new Innovation District.

Plans for the area around the hospital scheme include spaces for research, innovation and technologies, as well as offices, retail and residential units.

Cllr Blake continued: “With the aim of developing new ideas and pioneering technology being at the heart of the proposals, this plan has a key role to play in our Innovation District which has already generated more than £140m of investment.

“Leeds is already at the forefront of health innovation, research and learning, and this proposal will strengthen that position further.”

The authority will discuss the plans next week at a pre-planning application presentation.
