Bupa acquires Halifax’s Old Church Dental Practice

A dental practice set within a former church building in West Yorkshire has been acquired by healthcare company BUPA.

The Old Church Dental Practice, located in Halifax, occupies a Grade I-listed former church and still features the building’s original stone brickwork and stained glass windows.

Entrepreneur Prem Sehmi, who owns a string of other dental businesses, including Boutique Whitening and Quick Straight Teeth, sold the practice for seven figures.

Prem said: “This practice was special from the moment we acquired it. We realised at the time that we would only ever be custodians of such a prestigious building, and that whilst under our stewardship, we needed to look after it.

“Some people might think it a little incongruous to have such a modern dental practice within such a historical building. We disagree.”

He continued: “This building will withstand many more owners over the years. The tranquil environment we’ve created is a perfect setting for dental treatment.

“Our patients always comment that not only do we not look like a traditional dental practice, but our environment doesn’t feel like one either. I know I leave my patients in very good hands and wish the BUPA team all the best.”

Leeds law firm FTA Law oversaw the deal, which took less than eight weeks to complete.

FTA managing director Thomas Coates commented: “I have acted for Prem for nearly 10 years and he was actually my first ever dentist client.

“To see what he has done with the Old Church since we acquired it some years ago is highly impressive. It certainly has the wow factor! To be involved in the sale of such a beautiful and well known practice is a great moment for us.”

He added: “The practice will, I am sure, make a fine addition to the BUPA stable and serve as a real showpiece for them in the North of England.”
