Historical Coal Drops Yard opens to the public as major new culture district
Today (October 26), the Coal Drops Yard building has opened to the public.
Coal Drops Yard, near King’s Cross, is London’s newest district for shopping, food, art and events.
BAM UK Construct Ltd’s (BAM) completion of the Coal Drops Yard building takes the combined value of its completed work at Kings Cross to over three quarters of £1bn.
The site has involved over one million days of work on site, and over 4,600 people working on CDY alone.
Built in the 1850s, these buildings were home to the Industrial Revolution’s major handling of coal delivered to London every year. Ever since, the district has hosted markets; been used as film sets; and even became one of the biggest rave venues in the 1990s.
The building features 80,000 Welsh slate roof tiles from Snowdon and 300,000 unique bricks reclaimed from Sussex and Kent - the only areas of England which fire them.
BAM Design built the BIM model and did detailed design from stage C from concept architecture by Heatherwick Studios.
