Northumbrian Water to invest £3m and improve tap water quality for 500,000 people
Northumbrian Water is embarking on a multi-million pound project to improve tap water in Newcastle, Gateshead and North Tyneside
The company, a subsidiary of Northumbrian Water Group plc, will invest £3m in cleaning around nine kilometres of water mains.
Northumbrian Water supply partner MMB will carry out the project, using high pressure water jets to clean the pipes and removing disused sections to improve tap water quality for around 500,000 customers.
It will include work at locations along Great Lime Road from November until June 2019, starting at the Whitley Road end.
Graeme Ridley, project manager at the water firm, said: “Over time, sediment can build up on the inside of our pipes.
“While the sediment is harmless, it’s really important that we clean these sections of pipe to make sure that our customers continue to receive excellent tap water quality well into the future.”
He continued: “We appreciate that this is a busy road and it will likely cause some disruption to our customers, but we will continue to work very closely with North Tyneside Council throughout and will do everything we can to complete it as quickly as possible.
“We’d like to thank our customers for their patience in advance and will make sure people have plenty of information and are kept updated as work progresses in the area.”
