North Tyneside Mayor outlines 15-year plan to make borough ‘fit for the future’

North Tyneside Elected Mayor Norma Redfearn and her Cabinet have set out their ambitions for developing the borough over the next 15 years.

Presented to Cabinet on Monday night (November 26), the vision sheds light on the council’s hopes for shaping North Tyneside and making it fit for the future.

The ‘Ambition for North Tyneside’ plan will consider the needs of the southwest, northwest, northeast and southeast of the borough – including what has been delivered in the last 15 years, what projects are underway and what should be done in future.

Major proposals, subject to timing and funding, include the continued development of Killingworth Lake to create a community leisure facility; an agreed long-term plan for the historic Segedunum site; and the development of a masterplan for North Shields, which could include better housing and improved links between the town centre and the Fish Quay.

Other proposals include work to continue regenerating the coast and a bid for Environment Agency funding to improve the sea wall at the Southern Promenade in Whitley Bay.

The Ambition for North Tyneside plan also outlines ways to improve transport links, redevelop unused buildings, create more and better jobs and meet housing needs.

It follows the Local Plan agreed in July 2017 and sets out the borough’s spatial strategy over the next 15 years.

At its meeting this week, the Cabinet agreed the overall plan and its priority projects for investment and external funding.

Elected Mayor Norma Redfearn CBE said: “North Tyneside has always been about ambition.

“This plan spells out our ambition for the next 15 years and what we will try and achieve with our partners and for our communities.”

She continued: “As a council we are ambitious, we do care and we listen. Working alongside my Cabinet and officers we have looked closely at what residents and businesses in each part of the borough need.”
