Newcastle International Airport announces car park investment plans
Newcastle International Airport today (December 4) unveiled development plans for a £4m revamp of its car parking facilities.
The ambitious project includes a brand new purpose-built ‘Premium Meet & Greet’ car parking facility and a new ‘Premium Fast Track’ car parking area, which will include extra-wide bays and newly installed covered walkways from the car parks to the terminal.
The work is expected to be completed by summer 2019 but passengers with trips booked are already able to book the new services, which bosses say are being created in response to increased customer demand. The airport saw passenger numbers reach a ten-year high in 2017.
Chief operating officer, Richard Knight said at the unveiling: “Last year we saw the highest passenger numbers in a decade so it’s important that we future-proof our car parks with additional capacity, and also use the latest technology to improve the passenger experience.”
Knight went on to talk about pricing for the new facilities, explaining that increases were unavoidable.
He said: “As part of this investment project we have undertaken a review of the price tariffs across all car parks.
“The Airport provides a very competitive parking rate compared with other regional airports in the UK and we will continue to do this, however we must also ensure that we are able to provide a safe, secure and reliable car parking service to our passengers.”
The airport will continue to provide 15 minutes of free parking for pick-up and drop-off but will increase the price of the Express Car Park to £2 per ten minutes from January 2019.
A new designated taxi waiting area close to the Airport will also be created as part of the new project.
