Alhambra smashes fundraising goals

The Alhambra Shopping Centre in Barnsley teamed up with The Royal British Legion this year for the annual Poppy Appeal, to remember the lives of those fallen heroes that bravely fought to protect our country over the years.

The centre decided to try something a little different this year to mark the 100 year anniversary since World War 1 ended. The Centre launched a large Poppy Tree, of which customers were asked to purchase a large silk poppy and every purchase meant a new poppy would be placed up on the tree.

The visual display certainly made Barnsley shoppers dig deep, as the tree was full in a matter of 15 days and an amazing total of £21,040.61 was raised for the more than worthy charity - that provides lifelong support for the Armed Forces community - serving men and women, veterans, and their families.

Fundraisers even had a helping hand from Barnsley veterans and football club stars!

John Tarrant, Alhambra centre manager said: “Every year we run a poppy appeal in the centre to raise much needed funds for service men and women and this year was no different, bar the addition of our eye-catching tree!

“We are over the moon with the total amount raised, it has been another record year for us. The centre and our shoppers raised almost 30% of the entire Barnsley town centre total for this year’s poppy appeal which is just incredible!

“I would like to say thank you to everyone who donated to the appeal this year, your money will make a massive difference to those serving in the army and those that have served. I’m sure The Royal British Legion would echo this appreciation.”
