The pie's the limit as Bubwith butcher tastes success

A family-run butchers from Bubwith, near Selby, has won a coveted prize in the prestigious Deliciously Yorkshire Taste Awards.

J A Mounfield & Son Ltd, who have been based in Bubwith for more than a century, won the Best Yorkshire Pork Pie category.

Mounfield’s are no strangers to winning awards, having collected many accolades throughout their long history.  Butchering all their meat on site, the team pride themselves on 100% traceability from field to plate.

The judges described the winning pie as: “Well-baked and rustic.  Filled with well-seasoned chunky meat and a deliciously crisp and fresh pastry.  A pie to be celebrated!” They added: “The Taste Awards Pork Pie category really is one of the most coveted each year with huge entries from some of Yorkshire top butchers and this year’s winner beat some seriously stiff competition to be crown our 2018 champion.”

Proprietor David Mounfield said that he was delighted with the award and the recognition. “The Deliciously Yorkshire Taste awards are highly regarded in the region and it is a great honour for us to win. We pride ourselves on making exceptional pork pies and it is wonderful that Deliciously Yorkshire shares our opinion.

“I am especially pleased for our loyal and dedicated staff in our on-site bakery and abattoir. This award is ultimately for them – and for our loyal customers,” said David. “Our on-site abattoir means we have strict control over quality at all times.

He explained: “We have been working hard over the years to make our pork pies the best in Yorkshire and, indeed, in the north of England. We have won a number of awards in competitions organised by BPEX (the British Pig Executive), who were always ready to advise on the texture, taste and colour of our pies, so we could improve even further. We also won a Gold Award in the Great Taste Awards for the Best Speciality Pie from Yorkshire.

“The recipe started with my gran and granddad, and we’ve worked on it and just kept tinkering to improve it. We are proud of our Yorkshire heritage – and our Yorkshire suppliers. Our beef comes from Rawcliffe Bridge, our pork from Melbourne and our lamb from Ellerton,” he added.

The Mounfield’s have occupied their current business site since 1928. Due to expansion David’s grandfather, James Pratt Mounfield moved the business from a central village location, relocating from the building which is now a hairdressers.

David and his sister Anne began making the pies that have since become famous across the county in 1987, winning countless prestigious awards and are now recognised nationally as amongst the best in the country.

Today Anne still runs the bakery, while her son James works alongside his uncle David in the shop and abattoir
