New Lidl store in Huddersfield set to create up to 40 jobs

Plans for a new Lidl store in Huddersfield are to be submitted in the next few weeks after the multi-million pound scheme was given strong support by local residents.

Lidl is keen on transforming the rundown former Spotted Cow pub on New Hey Road, Salendine Nook, into a new store, creating up to 40 jobs.

The supermarket has appointed national planning and development consultancy Lichfields to deliver the permissions and earlier this month it hosted hosting a public consultation event on the proposals.

The evening event at the YMCA, New Hey Road, Huddersfield, was attended by around 80 people, with the plans receiving a positive response from 85 per cent of those who left feedback.

Adam Jackson, senior planner for Lichfields at its Leeds office, said: “This new development will breathe new life into the area and regenerate a site which has recently been a magnet for vandals.

“The consultation event has shown there is strong support for the development. It will provide new shopping and employment opportunities for local people and improve the visual appearance of the area by bringing the vacant site back into active use.”

The proposed development would include: 131 free car parking spaces; attractive landscaping and the retention of protected trees.

A full planning application is expected to be submitted to Kirklees Council in mid-January.

“If granted, this would mark a multi-million pound investment in the area and the creation of new jobs when the store opens.
