Tolent starts work on luxury apartment scheme for PegasusLife

Tolent has recently been announced as the preferred partner to deliver a luxury apartment scheme in Jesmond on behalf of PegasusLife.

Established in 2012, PegasusLife was created to rethink and reinvent the places and ways in which we live as we get older; providing luxury accommodation for later years living. PegasusLife is currently in the process of developing over 30 sites across the UK.

The development at Eskdale Terrace, Jesmond is a 5 storey terrace building comprising 63 apartments. The scheme sits within walking distance of the city centre, alongside a variety of eclectic boutiques, cafes and restaurants in the heart of the Brandling Village Conservation Area and South Jesmond Conservation Area.

The elegant and restrained proposal adopts an extruded gable terrace form. By taking the common dimension of a single pitched roof of a domestic building within the conservation area, and replicating this feature in proportion to the proposed mass, the proposal develops a similar language to that of the existing built community.

The development will replace the vacated Newcastle High School for Girls and contribute to the local prestige of Jesmond; whilst offering a wide range of unique, high-end housing choices to meet the needs of the over 60s market.

Our collaboration to date with PegasusLife has pushed us further into the residential opportunities facing our future, and has delivered a scheme for Eskdale that is rich in character and distinct in identity.”

The development will be built by local contractor Tolent, building upon their existing presence in Newcastle, where they are currently constructing Hadrian’s Tower (the city’s tallest building) as well as five projects with Newcastle City Council delivering housing accommodation aimed at over 55s with a range of care needs.

Preparation works have commenced on-site with the intended demolition progressing ahead of the main construction programme which is due to start in May 2019. The programme has been specifically designed to allow early access for prospective buyers with an on-site sales presence being available as early as October 2019 and internal show homes available to view in May 2020. The flexible and intuitive later living apartments are set to be complete in July 2020.

The requirement for retirement housing for the over 60s market is steadily increasing, coupled with considerable growth in the number of people over the age of 85. This is met with the need for innovative and modern housing solutions to help prevent some of the toughest hurdles the ageing population are facing in the UK.

Tolent has delivered a number of bespoke supported living developments totalling over £100m in the past few years alone; creating environments that provide support on an emotional, social and physical level to improve the overall well-being of the over 60s.
