County Durham's Walworth Castle invests £50k into new amenities

Walworth Castle hotel, near Darlington, has launched its new 1189 Bar and Kitchen after a 50k investment.

Owners, Rachel and Chris Swain, took over Walworth Castle in 2000, investing £8m throughout this time.

Named after the year the castle dates back to, the newly refurbished 1189 Bar and Kitchen is open daily from noon until 9pm, serving traditional dishes created by head chef, Steven Myers and his dedicated team.

Rachel Swain said: “We wanted to provide a casual eating space with a comforting menu, providing everything from light snacks to Chateaubriand.

“Chris and I are completely passionate about Walworth Castle and its been our life’s work to getting Walworth Castle where it is today.

“Over the years we have refurbished thoughout and two years ago we launched Lady Palmers Pavilion which provides outdoor wedding facilities.”

The 32-bed hotel, which employs 45 staff, also has a holiday cottage and a newly refurbished gatehouse lodge.

Chris added: “You can never rest on your laurels in such a fast moving industry. We are always striving to improve what we offer and this is the reason for launching 1189 Bar and Kitchen.

“We wanted to create an environment where guests can come and enjoy drink and a snack or a delicious 3 course meal. We wanted to create a friendly, professional environment where everyone is welcome, whether they are resident at the hotel or a stand alone diner.

“Having recently won Best Western’s Small Hotel of the Year, this has given us the springboard to let people know that Walworth Castle has changed considerably over the recent years, and we are excited to welcome customers, both old and new.”
