Jubilation at Staffordshire retirement living community

Champagne corks were popping at retirement living community Coven Court, when the popular scheme learned that it had secured a silver prize in the Elderly Accommodation Counsel (EAC) National Housing for Older People Awards.

The awards are seen as an important tribute because they are nominated and voted for by residents, their families and volunteers. In the West Midlands, 1,697 people cast votes for 133 developments managed by 36 housing providers.

Some of the top spots in the region’s awards list went to large national providers but local associations won praise for scooping major awards, too, with Coven Court figuring among the top retirement living communities in the West Midlands.

“The region has embraced housing with care and this is reflected in very strong support by residents, visitors and staff for developments in this area,” said the EAC, announcing the awards.

Tony Rogers is chair of the residents’ committee. He has lived at Coven Court for two years and describes it as his “forever home.” He wasn’t surprised to learn of the award: “It’s a great place to live and I love it here. There are really nice people and we’ve got an excellent retirement living officer. We’re very lucky.”

Coven Court is a community of 64 apartments and bungalows managed by Care Plus, for South Staffordshire Housing Association. The scheme provides self-contained accommodation for people aged 55 and above, with a sense of community supported by events and activities arranged by the residents themselves.
