Local youth provision benefits from community fund

The Armadillo Youth Café and Venue in Yate has been given a helping hand from local housebuilder, David Wilson Homes.

Armadillo has been chosen as one of the recipients of the David Wilson Homes Community Fund, which was launched earlier this year.

The David Wilson Homes Community Fund donates £1,000 each month to a charity or organisation which improves the quality of life for those living in the region. The new initiative is part of the company’s pledge to strengthen its ties with the areas in which it is building new homes.

Armadillo is a non-profit making community project located at the heart of Yate. Primarily a youth café for young people aged 10 to 17 years, the provision offers a safe, friendly and inclusive environment for young people to meet up and socialise without the constraints and expectations of schools, parents and society in general. It’s a place for them to have fun and be kids.

Armadillo’s Venues Operations Officer, Carene Whiting-Hays said she couldn’t wait to make use of the David Wilson Home’s Community Fund payment.

Carene said: “The money donated through the fund will be a massive help. It will go towards providing games and sports equipment for the garden and I’m really looking forward to letting the kids know.

“We would like to thank everyone at David Wilson Homes for their generous support, which will make a real difference to the lives of young people here.”

Ian Menham, managing director of David Wilson Homes, said: “Armadillo is a fantastic youth provision here in the region and we are so happy to be able to offer our help with the David Wilson Homes Community Fund payment.”

Armadillo is open to different school year groups Monday to Friday and can attract up to 150 young people on its popular Thursday night session.

The David Wilson Homes Community Fund has already helped St Mungo’s, the Bristol-based homelessness charity this year, and will continue to support worthy causes throughout the south west. To apply for one of the monthly grants, email charitysw@dwh.co.uk with details of your charity or organisation and how the donation would benefit the local community and improve lives.
