Pupils and families celebrate as modern new school is completed

Proud teaching staff and members of staff from Anglesey County Council showed pupils, parents and neighbours round the new state-of-the-art school at a community open day for Ysgol Santes Dwynwen primary in Newborough, Anglesey.

Built by award-winning Wynne Construction, the £5.7m school caters for 180 pupils, and also has nursery provision and a Flying Start unit. The school will open its doors for the first time after the Easter holidays on 29th April,

Constructed utilising a SIPs (structural insulated panel) solution, the single-storey building has nine classrooms, main hall, kitchen and offices, plus a Godly Play room and community room which can be booked for use out of school hours.

In addition to modern, well-equipped classrooms, it boasts specially-designed outdoor areas suitable for play and learning.

It replaces four village primary schools, Ysgol Bodorgan, Ysgol Dwyran, Ysgol Niwbwrch and Ysgol Llangaffo. The former Ysgol Niwbwrch is situated across the road.

Visitors heard that Anglesey County Council and Wynne Construction had developed the scheme to meet the global standard BREEAM ‘Excellent’, which evaluates best practice for environmental performance of a building through design, specification, construction and operation.

Wynne Construction contracts manager Graham Dickson said: “It’s a fantastic asset for generations of local children. It was good to see so many local people visiting to see it for themselves.

“The SIPs solution incorporating the off-site manufacture of the timber panels reduced on-site waste, saved time, and built in efficiencies in the construction phase.”

Ysgol Santes Dwynwen has been partly funded by the Welsh Government through the 21st Century Schools Programme, and is part of the £200m schools and public buildings contractor framework for North Wales.

A forward-looking construction contractor, Wynne has in recent years built a reputation for initiatives such as collaborative working, supply chain management programmes, health & safety & continuous improvement initiatives, and people development.

During 2018 alone, the firm was recognised with awards from organisations including North Wales Local Authority Building Control, Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and Constructing Excellence in Wales.

The year was crowned when Wynne Construction won the Constructing Excellence UK national finals, in the categories of best SME; and sustainability for its project at Ysgol Rhyd Y Llan, with Anglesey County Council.
