Derby Museums crowned ‘Star Bakers’ at Bake Off launch
The search is on to find Derby’s Star Baker with the launch of Love Marketing’s Bake Off.
The heat was certainly on for 6 teams of brilliant bakers (brilliant teams not brilliant bakers:) who braved the challenge and took part in the launch of The Bake Off 2019. In what was an afternoon of fun, frolics and a few soggy bottoms!
The launch took place at the prestigious Coghlans Cookery School based at Stancliffe Hall in Darley Dale with guidance from Simon Lilley - A Masterchef of Great Britain.
Teams representing well known Derby companies including HUUB, Derby Museums, Katapult, Quad, Marketing Derby and Century Mobile. Then it was aprons on, ovens warmed and whisks at the ready! They had 2 hours to produce a masterpiece, the competition was fierce and expectations were high!
HUUB represented by Dean Jackson, Founder and Jonny Wale from HUUB Watt Bike Team produced a mango and coconut cake, Dawn Foote, Founder of Derby Marketing Agency Katapult and Robbie Jones produced an amazing cake complete with rollercoasters and Powder Puff characters, Scott Harry, Director of Century Mobiles produced a cake with an 80’s mobile phone that actually rang! Creativity was exceptionally high with Marketing Derby’s Katie Wells and Katie Delve producing a chocolate guinness cake that split the judges opinion and the Quad and Mainframe team of Charlene Sharp and Delia Smith (not that Delia!!) producing a cake themed to show the collaboration of the two businesses. The stand out duo on the day was Mo Suleman and Judi Spall from Derby Museums who produced an amazing cake depicting the silk mill, complete with cascade of poppies, windows, brickwork and people – it was the deserving winner not only as the Victoria sponge was baked to perfection but the whole silk mill was completely edible. Mo Suleman said “It was an absolute pleasure to take part in this fantastic event and to then win it was just the icing on the cake! All credit goes to Judi who meticulously recreated the Silk Mill, which is on display in the Museum & Art Gallery Cafe if anyone wants to see it, and orchestrated the baking on the day. Without her I would have been lost because it’s so much harder than you initially think. A big shout out to the other bakers who made the whole day fun and enjoyable. Now we have to think how we’re going to top that for the final!”. Mo now wins a place in the final, which will take place at the Marketing Derby Garden Party on the 12th September 2019 at Stancliffe Hall.
Lindsey Hatfield, Commercial Development Manager at Marketing Derby said “When Dawn first approached me with the idea I thought it would be a perfect event for the Bondholders to be involved in. An opportunity to show off their creative flair whilst bonding with team mates in the beautiful surroundings of Stancliffe Hall. It has now escalated into scraps in the car park over who can make the best Victoria Sponge, luckily we have our own Mary Berry in the form of Bev Crighton to keep the budding bakers under control”
