Walk to School Week Inspires Children to be More Active!
St Lawrence Primary School in Byker enjoyed their Walk to School Week, vowing to continue their energetic efforts to tackle obesity and poor health in children with the introduction of a daily mile.
The event, sponsored by Winn Group, involved learning about the environment and how clean air can make a huge difference, as well as being more active on the way to and from school, and during school time.
The children really bought into the theme, with lessons focused on the topic as well as a one-mile run which is set to become a permanent feature at the school.
Teacher Rachel Woodley, who organised the week on behalf of St Lawrence, said: “Children’s days get off to a really good start as they get to talk about their surroundings on their journeys to school with their parents. They breathe cleaner air and get some exercise. It has really benefitted our children and they have loved it.”
Winn Group Associate Director Michael Warmington commented: “We are strong advocates when it comes to helping the local community. The children at St Lawrence Primary School were a real credit to themselves and their parents during the Walk to School Week and hopefully they will continue being more active in and out of school.”
