Historic Sunderland pub sailing towards new ownership this summer

Sunderland’s Mexico 70 restaurant owners have revealed they will be taking on ownership of the city’s historic Ship Isis pub.

Despite the team’s Mexican food proving popular, The Ship Isis’ menu will not follow Mexico 70’s theme. The Isis will be taken over by new management from tomorrow (August 1).

The Ship Isis building is currently owned by the University of Sunderland, and opened in 1885. Estate agent Bradley Hall acted on behalf of the landlord to let the space.

Michael McGhin, commercial property manager at Bradley Hall, said: “The Ship Isis is one of the city’s most iconic pubs and we were delighted that an established, Sunderland-based business has stepped in to keep it operating.

“It is an incredibly popular destination for local people, and we know that the local community will be pleased it will continue to offer its current charm and character under the new management.”

A spokesperson for the university added: “This is a positive outcome and really good news for the city. Having worked alongside the agent we’re really pleased to have so quickly secured new tenants for the landmark Ship Isis pub.”
