Specsavers Armthorpe Gets Beach Ready for National Sunglasses Day

Specsavers Armthorpe is stressing the importance of UV protection and eye tests over the summer months following National Sunglasses Day.

The store brought the beach to South Yorkshire with a number of activities in-store throughout the week in a bid to raise funds for RNIB and awareness of eye health in the summer.

Strongest in the summer, UV radiation is widely seen as the damaging culprit for sunburns and skin cancer, but most don’t appreciate the impact it has on people’s vision.

Whilst seemingly harmless, not protecting your eyes with UV protection has a similar effect as not applying sun cream, with long term exposure resulting in irritation and in some circumstances, sight loss.

Good quality UV sunglasses can help to avoid damaging rays, relieve eye strain, enable people to see clearly in all conditions and soften harsh, bright lights.

That is why throughout the week, Specsavers held a raffle in store to raise funds for RNIB, helping to raise nearly £100.

By taking part in activities such as the raffle, customers helped to support RNIB’s team of eye health professionals support up to 400 individuals a month through diagnosis: face-to-face and on the telephone.

Zoe Lancaster, the stores’ Retail Director, comments: ‘Whilst we had a bit of fun in store throughout the week for a good cause such as the raffle won by Mr Sadd, there remains a serious side to sunning yourself without shades.’

Zoe adds: ‘If your lenses lack sufficient UV protection, you run the risk of damaging your eyes in the short-term, but it could have long-term impacts too. As well as protecting your eyes, they also help you to look cool in the hot summer months!’
