£60m Sheffield city centre build-to-rent development given go-ahead

Sheffield councillors have given the green light to a £60m build-to-rent development for the private residential market.

Designed by Whittam Cox Architects and owned by a joint venture group made up of Angelo Gordon and Ridgeback Group, the development on the corner of Rockingham Street and Wellington Street in Sheffield city centre will provide 364 new apartments for private rent, offering sizes from one to three bedrooms.

The development, known as the Kangaroo Works, forms part of the mixed-use Heart of the City II scheme, labelled Block F on its masterplan. When completed, the property’s ground floor will offer up to five commercial spaces that Whittam Cox Architects says are suited to cafes, restaurants or start-up businesses.

It will operate under the build-to-rent model, which is designed to provide high quality accommodation specifically for the non-student market.

Ian Lowson, director at Whittam Cox Architects, said: “We’re delighted that planning has been granted for this exciting new development which will enhance the character of the area and create a bespoke, transformational scheme for the City.

“We look forward to working with Henry Boot Construction, Angelo Gordon, Ridgeback Group and Brantingham Homes on such a significant local scheme”.

Corinne Hall, project architect added, “We have worked closely with the local planning authority to develop a combined vision for Kangaroo Works – a development of high-quality design which celebrates its significance as a single, unified block within the city centre.

“As a team who both live and work in Sheffield, we’re excited to see this scheme take a step further towards construction.”
