Brain Tumour Support given £1,000 boost by Barratt Homes

Brain Tumour Support in Thornbury has become the latest charity to benefit from a £1,000 donation from Barratt Homes.

The five star housebuilder, which has its regional headquarters in Bristol, donates £1,000 each month to local charities and good causes as part of the Barratt Homes Community Fund.

Brain Tumour Support provides support to anyone affected by any kind of brain tumour at any point from diagnosis and for as long as support is needed.

Set up by Tina Mitchell Skinner the charity was recently awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service – the highest award given to groups across the UK to recognise outstanding work done by volunteers in their communities.

“On behalf of all the patients and families that we support, we would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to Barratt Homes for the company’s generous donation,” said Tina. “We rely entirely on donations such as this to maintain our support services, which are a lifeline to thousands of brain tumour patients across the country. £1000 enables us to fund 10 home visits – an essential part of our support service where one of our specialist Brain Tumour Support Workers visits a patient and their family to determine their individual support needs. As we receive no government funding, it would be wonderful if more companies could support the work we do and make similar donations.”

The charity was nominated by Barratt Homes finance secretary Jacqui Knowlton whose family benefitted from the charity’s support when her husband Martin was diagnosed with a particularly large and aggressive brain tumour.

“It was invaluable to have support from the charity as they really understood the challenges that having a brain tumour presented,” said Jacqui. “We were among people who understood the day to day challenges and he always looked forward to his time spent with the charity before he passed away in March 2016.”

Russell Glimstead, managing director of Barratt Homes in Bristol, said: “Brain Tumour Support provides invaluable help to so many people and we are grateful to Jacqui for nominating them for this month’s donation.”

The Barratt Homes Community Fund donates £1,000 each month to a charity or organisation which improves the quality of life for those living in the region. The scheme was launched earlier this year and is part of the company’s pledge to strengthen its ties with the areas in which it is building new homes.

So far this year Barratt Homes in Bristol has also supported Swindon SOBS, the WW1 Somerset Wood in Taunton, Help Bristol’s Homeless and Magic Moments.
