Sussex charities win cash prizes totalling £15k

Specialist charity insurer Ansvar has been scouring the county since June in a bid to find five Sussex-based charities to each win a £3,000 share of £15,000. Now, after reviewing nearly 150 entries, Ansvar has revealed the five charities that have won the cash: The Crew Club, Jamie’s Farm, Willingdon Community Hub Library, Rockinghorse Children’s Charity and Memory Lane.

The Crew Club is a community-based charity in Whitehawk, Brighton, that offers opportunities to disadvantaged children and young people. Their £3,000 prize will be used for a Christmas celebration for under 12s, a tea party for 100 elderly residents and a Community Fun Day.

Jamie’s Farm provides a five-day residential and follow-up programme to help children engage with their education through farming, family and therapy. With a newly set up farm in Lewes, the £3,000 will go towards building a firepit and seating.

Willingdon Community Hub Library, in Eastbourne, will use the money for the necessary equipment to create a community garden that local schools can use as a Forest School to facilitate outdoor learning. The rest of the community will also be able to use the space. Rockinghorse Children’s Charity won their share of the prize fund for their plans to set up a paediatric orthopaedic virtual clinic to support children with suspected fractures.

Memory Lane is a charity set up to support people living with dementia and their carers, through activities such as swimming, dancing and singing. The money will allow the charity to set up a bowling club.

Ansvar’s Deputy Managing Director Martyn Fletcher commented: “We were overwhelmed with entries and our judges had a real challenge on their hands narrowing almost 150 down to five! The charities that we have selected each explained how they intended to spend the prize money, showing our judges the positive impact that it could have on their local communities.

“We’re celebrating 60 years of Ansvar in the UK. Sussex is a very special place for us as we’re headquartered in Eastbourne, so it made sense for us to mark our milestone by giving something back to the county that we’ve been based in for six decades.”

The successful charities have all been notified and Ansvar will remain in touch with them to see how their projects unfold.
