Housebuilder opens new public outdoor space for Swanage

Swanage has a new public green space to enjoy, thanks to local housebuilder Barratt Homes.

The company has opened Washpond Natural Greenspace this week. The area features paths for walkers, scenic viewpoints, places to rest and even a ‘dog beach’.

The area has been made possible as part of Barratt Homes’ commitment to supporting and enriching the communities it works within.

The five-star housebuilder hopes that the 5.6 hectare site, off Washpond Lane, will become a popular spot for walkers, joggers those who enjoy nature.

Jon Green, managing director at Barratt Homes, said: “We’re thrilled to be able to open up this natural green space for the entire community in Swanage. It’s got some fantastic coastal views and we know people are going to love spending time there, whether they’re getting active outdoors or simply relaxing and soaking up the view.”

Barratt Homes is no stranger to creating green spaces. Last year it created 13.4 hectares of green space and planted or retained 42,800 trees or shrubs.

Councillor David Walsh, Dorset Council’s Portfolio Holder for Planning, said: “This is an important addition to the open space within Swanage that is available and accessible to all. It will also help alleviate the impacts of new residential development on the nearby protected heathlands and other habitats.”
