Yorkshire company plays significant £250k role in transforming London Bridge station

The £1bn redevelopment of London Bridge station, built using 100,000 handmade Yorkshire bricks, has been approved by RIBA.

The York Handmade Brick Company supplied the bricks to London Bridge Station, plus an additional 100,000 bricks for office and retail development, London Bridge Place, which reopened in 2017 after a five-year redevelopment.

The contracts were worth a collective £250k to York Handmade.

London Bridge was transformed by Network Rail as part of the government-sponsored Thameslink Programme, and remained open for the 50 million passengers that use London’s oldest station each year.

The new concourse united all 15 platforms for the first time and modern facilities made the landmark station fully accessible for all.

David Armitage, the chairman of York Handmade, said: “This contract, together with our work at London Bridge Place, has really put York Handmade on the map.

“Our ability to produce attractive bespoke bricks to order means we are now on the radar of influential architects and builders across the country.

“It is fantastic that a Yorkshire company should have played a significant role in the acclaimed regeneration of the London Bridge area, which is now a commercial and residential hotspot.”
