Civil engineering works manager scoops prestigious construction award

A works manager delivering a major build for a leading civil engineering firm has scooped industry recognition.

Gareth Jones, Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK works manager for the A49 link road scheme in Wigan, Lancashire, received the BSG Site Manager of the Year: Wales award at The Building Safety Group awards event this month.

The Ruthin-based firm was also highly commended in the Environmental category for its work at the Clocaenog Forest Wind Farm in Denbighshire.

Works manager Gareth, known as Ginny, has overseen the A49 build since Jones Bros were appointed to the scheme by Wigan Council last year.

The A49 link road will connect Warrington Road in Goose Green to Westwood Way, Chapel Lane junction and the town centre. The road passes over busy Poolstock Lane and aims to relieve congestion on the road.

After collecting his award at the ceremony in Warwick, Gareth paid tribute to the team on site.

He said: “We’ve worked well as a team, keeping the safety side up particularly.

“You’re only as good as the team behind you and this award is for all of us, not just me.

“The project is going well so far, we recently passed 250,000 hours without a lost time injury and we’re working well.

“I was definitely pleased to be back on site rather than on stage!”

Jones Bros’ work building onshore wind turbines in Clocaenog forest was praised by judges, awarding them Highly Commended in the Environment category.

Operatives worked during the planning phase to significantly reduce the amount of vehicle journeys to and from site as well as sourcing materials directly from site to save extra loads passing through public roads.

Michael Jolley, Jones Bros senior health, safety and environment manager, said: “This is further recognition for the hard work our teams put in to ensure we continue to maintain and improve our own high standards of health and safety on site.

“Congratulations to everyone involved.”

BSG Managing Director, Paul Kimpton said: “The BSG Awards ceremony was once again a national celebration of our members’ dedicated commitment to Health and Safety in construction.

“Recognised award winners such as Jones Bros should be immensely proud of their achievement and highly commended for their admirable approach to reducing risk in the workplace.

“It is BSG Members like Jones Bros who make a significant contribution to raising the bar when it comes to health and safety standards across the sector, and we offer them our congratulations.”

Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros is now being run by the second and third generations of the founding family. It employs more than 350 people.

In addition to highways, it is currently working on contracts in various sectors including the construction of waste management facilities, renewable energy, and flood and marine defence projects across the UK.
