Port of Tyne supports communities in South Tyneside

A community project that aims to help people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) groups feel part of the local community has received a funding boost from the Port of Tyne Community Action Fund at the Community Foundation.

Compact for Race Equality in South Tyneside (CREST) is a registered charity that assists members of the borough’s growing BAME community to improve their quality of life, through a series of projects based around identity, employability and equality.

Support from the Port of Tyne’s Community Action Fund will enable CREST volunteers to support 30 asylum seekers and refugees with advice and activities centred on community integration.

The project will be delivered in partnership with local schools, and will see a host of informal events held at community venues with the aim of encouraging friendship and inclusion.

Louise Tinkler, Director of HR and Communications at the Port of Tyne, said: “We are delighted to support this local project, which encourages positive community life, as well as improving mental health and wellbeing.

“The support from CREST will work to build stronger communities where people from all backgrounds can live in harmony.”

Elaine Holdsworth, Senior Philanthropy Advisor at the Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland, said: “CREST is a vital service, which promotes diversity and inclusion in South Tyneside. Funding from the Port of Tyne Community Action Fund will provide support on a range of issues as well as helping parents and families within the local community.”

The grant of £2,107 from the Port of Tyne Community Action Fund will enable an advice and support worker to provide assistance to asylum seekers and refugees, as well as supporting activities and administration.

Since 2007, the Port of Tyne has donated almost £500,000 in grants through the Port of Tyne Community Action Fund at the Community Foundation. Recently, grants totalling £18,480 have been awarded by a panel of employees who meet to review applications and award community grants.
