Manchester’s hotel pipeline stronger than ever

Almost 30 new hotels are set to open in the Manchester city region within the next three years. Mollie’s Motel and Diner by Soho House Group, The Quality Street Hotel and Hotel Brooklyn are among those that will open this year - with many more to follow between 2021 and the end of 2023. Adrian Ellis, Chair of Manchester Hoteliers’ Association (MHA), said the continued rise of Manchester - now one of the fastest growing cities in Europe according to a recent Deloitte Real Estate report - is the main contributor to the growth of the hotel development pipeline. “By 2023,” said Adrian, “the city region will boast 98 hotels. That’s 28 on top of the 70 that already operate here.” He added: “The pace of the city’s growth really is unprecedented. This includes a multitude of apartments, new offices, retailers, cultural attractions and of course, hotels. “Over the past five years hotels in Manchester have enjoyed successive years of growth, with occupancies in the city hovering around 80% for the last five years. And this despite new hotels being added to the stock regularly. “Hoteliers in the city region are now working together to plug this gap between supply and demand and are working with Marketing Manchester to help create more activities, events, conferences and attractions so guests and travellers keep visiting our wonderful city.” MHA, which was founded 20 years ago and now has over 60 active members, is at the forefront of the hotel boom. “We are working closely with the city authorities to help create new demand for the city and to work on a variety of new initiatives,” said Adrian. “In 2020 alone, eight new hotels are due to open. The pipeline is very strong and this follows the recent opening of Dakota Manchester, Native Manchester in Victoria Warehouse and The Stock Exchange.” Adrian added: “Competition is fierce but new hotels mean new jobs and increased opportunity to attract and retain the best talent in the city. “Quality hotels, bars and restaurants also help attract more people to the city region and enhance Manchester’s already strong position as an international destination
