Tesco announces 1,800 potential redundancies in bakery reshuffle

A nationwide supermarket has announced that more than 1,800 jobs will be cut in its stores across the country.

Tesco, one of the ‘Big Four’, has announced that 1,816 bakery jobs are in danger due to changes in its bakeries.

The changes will start taking place in May, with 58 of its in-store bakeries only completing pre-baked products, and changes in the amount of products baked at a further 201 locations.

The company said that it expects “thousands of other jobs” to be available in its stores in the near future.

Jason Tarry, Tesco’s UK and ROI chief executive, said: “We need to adapt to changing customer demand and tastes for bakery products so that we continue to offer customers a market-leading bakery range in store.

“We know this will be very difficult for colleagues who are impacted, and our priority is to support them through this process.

“We hope that many will choose to stay with us in alternative roles.”
