Coastal West Sussex Partnership backs calls for workers to support Sussex’s growers and horticultural industry

The Coastal West Sussex Partnership has backed a call from the West Sussex Growers’ Association for more workers to take up jobs across the horticultural sector, in particular the edible and food production businesses.

Caroline Wood, Director of the Coastal West Sussex Partnership, commented: “The horticultural industry in Sussex is worth over £1bn and employs more than 10,000 full time employees. As such, it a vital part of the coastal economy which is currently facing extreme challenges.

“With garden centres closed, ornamental and commercial growers have taken a massive hit on their businesses and aren’t able to get stocks to market whilst food growers have issues getting enough staff to pick the crops ready for us to buy. We would urge people who are facing time away from their regular work to look for opportunities with our local producers.
