Newcastle cat cafe "blown away" by support as community raises £10k to help prevent closure

A Newcastle cat cafe has seen an outpouring of community support after announcing its closure this week.

Mog-on-the Tyne said on Tuesday that it is “not in a position to fight” following the impact of COVID-19, and will be closing its doors permanently.

However, since the announcement, the cafe has seen unexpected support from the surrounding community, with more than £10k being raised in the past three days via online fundraising platform GoFundMe.

In its statement earlier this week, the cafe said: “It is with a heavy heart and great sadness to have to announce that we must close our little cafe.

“Mog is so much more than just a business, it is a community for like minded cat folk, a safe and happy place filled with joy, love and laughter for so many.

“We have worked so hard over the last 6 years and loved every minute, but sadly, uncertainty with the future due to Covid and our lease coming to an end, we just aren’t in a position to fight.

“We are working to find forever homes for our furry friends, we love them and will miss them so much.”

Posting after the fundraisers had been set up, the company added: “We are absolutely blown away by all your lovely messages and support overnight!

“Waking up to see people donating to GoFundMe pages and offering ways they can help has left us in disbelief and the impact our little café has made on so many people’s lives.”

Commenting on the community’s support, Mog on the Tyne said: “We’re absolutely blown away by the support we’ve received so far and we’re currently working with the landlord to explore all possible options, hoping our little café has a place in the new normal.”
