Wagamama owners in talks to close up to 120 restaurants
A UK restaurant group has confirmed that it is negotiating with landlords over restructuring plans that may see it close up to 120 sites.
The Restaurant Group (TRG), based in London, is understood to be permanently closing between 100 to 120 restaurants, which will affect up to 3,000 jobs.
The company owns several chains across the country, and has said that the restructuring will not affect its Wagamama business, or its airport concessions and pub operations.
Earlier this year, TRG shut 60 of its Chiquito sites and its Food & Fuel pub chain, after placing the two sub-brands into administration.
In a statement this morning, it said: “As is widely understood our industry is facing exceptional challenges in what is an unprecedented operating environment.
“The casual dining sector was already facing significant challenges prior to the onset of COVID-19, with overcapacity and significant cost pressures.
“In order to meet both the immediate challenges and to build a post-lockdown business with a sustainable future, we are in discussions with our landlords regarding potential restructuring options for our leisure estate.”
