Crowning glory for Globe Works

Empire, the property development company who are undertaking the transformation of Globe Works mill into apartments has secured planning permission for the historic building’s crowning glory – a two-storey roof extension which will house 26 apartments.

At the same time Empire secured planning permission to carry out extensive refurbishment of the building’s towering chimney. Previous owners of the mill had wished to remove it but keen to preserve this iconic feature, Empire instead decided to retain it, despite potential delays due to the planning process.

Work to transform the former industrial mill started in 2017 and is nearing completion. The final piece in the jigsaw was the roof extension which will bring the total number of apartments at the development to 150 whilst creating a Manhattan loft feel to the development.

The team at Empire are keen to thank the planners at Bolton Council for their support during the planning process. Speaking about this, Emma Thompson, Legal & Planning Director at Empire said, “Like us, the Council were keen to preserve the integrity of this amazing building. When it came to the roof extension, we spent a lot of time discussing the details, for example the window options and colours for these.

“We are really pleased with the outcome and are looking forward to putting the finishing touches to this amazing building.”

Such has been the success of this development and the company’s prior development of a former office block on Bradshawgate in town that they are currently seeking outline planning for a further development of 500 apartments in the town centre.
