North East online retailer creates jobs after quadrupling turnover

A North East retailer has announced that it is creating new jobs as it expands following an increase in turnover.

EI Retail, based in South Tyneside, has expanded into new larger premises at Garwood Street, more than tripling its floorspace after quadrupling its turnover.

The company specialises in the online retail of health care and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) products, and is looking to add 6 or 7 new staff to its team of 14.

Director Mark Penn commented: “The business has experienced massive growth in its first four years.

“This year our turnover will be four times what it was last year, and we expect it to more than double again next year. With that has come a need for more space and staff.

“South Tyneside is the perfect location for an emerging technology and logistics business like ours.

“As well as great transport links and infrastructure, and proximity to the Port of Tyne, we have had fantastic support from the council from day one and are fortunate to find ourselves at the heart of a vibrant and supportive business community.”

“We are a growing business and are actively seeking new people – we will create another six to seven more full-time roles in the next 3-4 months to accommodate our growth in sales.

“We have only just moved into these new premises and already we are looking at where we will grow to.

“Our plan is to develop and build our own dedicated distribution facility here in South Tyneside and become one of the largest employers in the area and a company of choice for candidates. Our current trajectory puts us on track to do that.”

Councillor Iain Malcolm, leader of South Tyneside Council, said: “This is great news. We know that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a big impact on businesses across the North East and it’s wonderful to be able to celebrate another South Tyneside success story.

“I’m pleased that the council have been able to support EI Retail’s growth by facilitating a quick move to larger premises.

“We wish them every success as they continue to thrive and create more opportunities for the business and deliver more jobs within the borough during these very difficult times.”
