Local housing developers welcome MP to new housing site

Local property developers, Barratt Homes Yorkshire West, Commercial Estates Group (CEG) and Sky-House recently welcomed MP for Penistone and Stockbridge, Miriam Cates, to Oughtibridge Mill to learn more about plans to breathe new life into the brownfield site.

Cates MP requested a visit to the site to discuss the potential reopening of the nearby Stocksbridge railway line and take a tour of the site where work is due to start in August. The acquisition of the site from CEG, which was announced earlier this year, will see the former Oughtibridge Mill transformed into an attractive property development of nearly 300 homes that will support the local economy with jobs and funding into the surrounding area.

Speaking on the visit, David Coe, Development Director at Barratt Development Yorkshire West, commented: “We were delighted to welcome Miriam Cates MP to the Oughtibridge Mill site. It’s an exciting venture between Barratt Homes Yorkshire West, CEG and Sky-House so it was great to show Miriam around and tell her more about our plans for the site’s future. We’re always keen to invest in the areas in which we build and Oughtibridge is no different, we’re looking forward to being involved in the community and supporting it where we can.”

Steve McBurney, Regional Manager at CEG, said: “We worked closely with Miriam Cates MP, as well as Sheffield City Council and Bradfield Parish Council, as the development proposals for this brownfield site progressed. It was fantastic to welcome her to the site now that we have completed the demolition and remediation works and construction of the new road bridge across the River Don. Our vision is now being brought to life; transforming Oughtibridge Mill, which has seen almost 100 years of industrial use, into a vibrant place to live, enjoy and thrive.”

Miriam Cates, Member of Parliament for Penistone and Stockbridge, said: “It was a pleasure to visit the Oughtibridge Valley site and to see the great progress that is being made. Former industrial brownfield sites like this one are exactly the places where we should be building the homes that our communities need. I was particularly pleased about the plans to retain historical characteristics and heritage, and that the developers are keen to ensure that the new houses integrate well into the community.”
