Hampshire apprentice marks two years with Barratt Homes

A student from Bordon, Hampshire, is celebrating a two-year long apprenticeship with Barratt Homes.

Harry Poulter, 20, from Bordon, started as apprentice at the five star housebuilder’s New Quarter development in the town on 15th October 2018. Back then, Harry was inspired to apply for a carpentry apprenticeship after undertaking a week of work experience with Barratt Homes and enjoyed it so much that he approached the company to see if they had any vacancies. After a thorough interview process, was lucky enough to secure a place.

Two years down the line and Harry has since won the Duke of Gloucester award, which recognises the skills of apprentice craftspeople and has also achieved his Advanced NVQ Level 2 in carpentry.

Harry said: “I’ve learnt so much from working with Barratt Homes, it feels like a great achievement and I’ve enjoyed every moment. The apprenticeship scheme has helped me to make my career goal a reality and I’m so grateful for the opportunity.”

Harry is now working with new pupils who are just starting out on their apprenticeships, helping them to get the most out of their work experience. These pupils are provided by the Future Skills Centre (FSC) which to date has provided 17 work experience placements at Barratt’s New Quarter development since 2017 and have a further 6 planned for the 2020 / 21 academic year.

Working with organisations like the FSC enables Barratt to offer opportunities for training and career development to local people. Anthony Dimmick, Community Liaison Manager for Barratt Homes, is thrilled that the housebuilder is able to help young people in the local area pro-gress in their career.

He said: “This is proof that our community outreach projects can have such positive impacts on local people. Our work experience opportunities and educational workshops have inspired Harry in his career journey and it’s wonderful that he is now celebrating having been with us for two years.”

Steve Gilder, head of construction at BCoT and the FSC said: “I’d just like to take this opportunity to thank Anthony and all the team at the New Quarter development – but especially Harry Poulter – for your continued collective support with regards to work experience. It provides a unique opportunity for full time FSC students to work alongside a C&J apprentice on an actual construction site.”

Harry is working as carpentry apprentice at Barratt Homes’ New Quarter development in Bordon, a selection of homes forming part of the Whitehill & Bordon town regeneration project, transforming the grounds of the former Louisburg Barracks.
