New home holds the key to Pickering couple’s hearts with surprise engagement

Moving into a new home is always a day to remember, but the occasion became even more special for one Pickering couple, thanks to a surprise marriage proposal just as the door to their new home was opened for the first time.

Matt Roberts proposed to his partner of three years, Lauren Holmes, just as the couple stepped into their new three bedroom home at David Wilson Homes’ Heather Croft development on Whitby Road in Pickering.

Having planned the surprise proposal for nearly four months, Matt was able to call on some secret help from the sales team at Heather Croft, who granted him early access to his new home, allowing him to create a romantic setting before popping the question. Having created a pathway of rose petals from the front door to the kitchen, Matt uncovered the engagement ring from a kitchen drawer before getting down on one knee.

Matt, a sales advisor at Barratt Homes’ Fleet Green development in Hessle, met Lauren, a veterinary nurse from Amotherby, three years ago when he took his labrador for a check-up at the practice Lauren worked at at the time. The couple have a 15-month-old daughter called Violet, who they hope will be a flower girl when they get married.

Matt said: “We were really excited to move into our new home, but I wanted to make the day extra-special and finish the year on a high after what’s been a tricky few months. It was certainly nerve-racking making sure everything was in place for Lauren’s arrival, but the sales team were a real help in making sure my plans remained under wraps. Thankfully, she said yes, which made for the perfect start to life in our new home.”

Dawnie Carrigan-Hammond, senior sales advisor at David Wilson Homes’ Heather Croft development, added: “We’re always pleased to see the smiles on people’s faces when they pick up the keys to their new home, but Matt and Lauren’s day was extra special and we were only too happy to help Matt as he planned his big surprise. We couldn’t be happier for Matt and Lauren, and wish them many years of happiness as a married couple in their new home.”
