Shaftesbury celebrates prestigious Michelin recognition across its portfolio

More than 25 restaurants across Shaftesbury’s West End portfolio, which includes the Opera Quarter in Covent Garden, Fitzrovia and Seven Dials, have received accolades in the 2021 Michelin Guide to Great Britain and Ireland. The Michelin Awards were revealed by Davina McCall and Michelin director, Gwendal Poullennec, at a virtual event on January 25.

With a Michelin Star, Bib Gourmand, Michelin Plates and a brand new category for the UK, the Green Michelin star, restaurants in Shaftesbury’s estates are represented in all categories of the 2021 Michelin Guide. The Ninth, a contemporary restaurant by chef Jun Tanaka located in Fitzrovia, led the charge, retaining its coveted one Michelin Star.

Shaftesbury’s tenants with Bib Gourmands include Kiln, Kricket, Bao, Palomar, Bancone, Salt Yard, Barbary and Volta Do Mar. Those with Michelin Plates include Dehesa, Folie, Heritage, Ember Yard, Norma, Lima, Ampeli, Nutshell, Barrica, Café Murano, Tredwells, Dishoom, Brindisa and Duck and Rice.

New for the UK guide this year, Michelin introduced a Green Star Award dedicated to restaurants at the forefront of the industry due to their sustainable practices. Tredwells in Seven Dials was one of only four restaurants in London and 23 in the UK to receive the new award.

Chantelle Nicholson, Chef Patron at Tredwells, commented: “As a member of the Chef’s manifesto, my passion is to deliver a better food system through everyday actions, whether they are big or small. Our menu is over 50% plant-based, all our meat is from organic, pasture-fed farms, and we always look to partner with sustainable suppliers. In addition, we look at reducing waste and recycling where possible, but without ever compromising the experience for customers. We are thrilled to have been awarded this prestigious accolade from such an important and influential industry institution.” Volta Do Mar, the new Portuguese restaurant in the Opera Quarter founded by Simon Mullins, also the founder and former director of Salt Yard, won a coveted Bib Gourmand award recognising excellent food at competitive prices.

Isabel Almeida da Silva, Co-Founder of Volta Do Mar, said: “ We are extremely honoured and thrilled to have received the Bib Gourmand Award from Michelin. It is a testament to the incredibly hard work and dedication our whole team has given over the course of a very difficult and challenging last year. We have so much more to show with our restaurant and we cannot wait to reopen and welcome our guests back as soon as possible.“

Julia Wilkinson, Restaurant Director at Shaftesbury, added: “The Michelin Guide remains a respected voice in the industry and we are delighted that Tredwells and Volta Do Mar have received such strong recognition. Also, that so many of our other tenants are included in the latest Guide after such a challenging year. Each offers something special to their respective village, and is emblematic of our strategy of finding and supporting the most innovative and exciting concepts and chefs. We are looking forward to London re-opening soon and people to be able to come out again and enjoy all the culinary delights that London has to offer.”
