New Morrisons store set to create 140 jobs at Newcastle Great Park
A national supermarket is set to create 140 jobs as it announces plans to build a new branch in Newcastle.
Morrisons, which has around 500 stores in the UK, will be opening its newest site at a 3 acre site at Newcastle Great Park.
The supermarket chain has exchanged contracts with Taylor Wimpey and Persimmon Homes for the acquisition of the site.
A planning application for the store is scheduled to be submitted in March 2021, with a decision expected in the summer.
The company is aiming for the new store to open at the end of the year.
Morrisons senior development manager, James Smith, said: “The Great Park development will create a new community which we’re pleased to now be a part of.
“We look forward to completing the store, creating new jobs and welcoming shoppers to Morrisons Great Park.”
A spokesperson for Taylor Wimpey and Persimmon Homes said: “We’re delighted to announce that the deal with Morrisons is now complete and the news will no doubt provide a boost to the local community.
“These are still challenging times for everyone therefore it’s good to see positive steps being made, despite the pandemic, which will provide the community of Newcastle Great Park with vital facilities.
“We’re looking forward to seeing the plans take shape over the coming months and are confident that securing a major anchor supermarket will act as a catalyst for further investment within the town centre.”
