MP visits new modular homes in Darlington
Local MP Peter Gibson visited a new housing development in Darlington today and found out how modular housing can speed up the construction of new affordable homes. He was shown round a selection of new modular homes owned by Karbon Homes on the Central Park development in Darlington that have been manufactured off site in North Yorkshire in 28 days before being transported and craned into position. The 17 affordable homes were delivered by developer Keepmoat Homes as part of their £45m 332-home regeneration scheme that is being delivered in partnership with Darlington Borough Council and Homes England. Peter also met with resident Samantha Leslie who originally began renting a home on the development, with her partner Mark and their two children, through the Rent to Buy scheme but they now owns 60% of their home through Shared Ownership. Paul Fiddaman, Chief Executive, Karbon Homes, said: “We’re delighted to show Peter how we’re using modern methods of construction to build new affordable homes for local people and give them a helping hand into home ownership.” Peter Gibson MP said: “It’s been very interesting to learn about the prefabrication process and construction of modular housing, including the attention to detail that goes into the build. “I look forward to seeing more quality and affordable modular homes being built in Darlington soon in line with the Government’s recent work on prioritising the quality of new build housing in recent planning reforms.” Ian Prescott, Land and Partnerships Director said: “Keepmoat is at the forefront of innovation in volume housing design and the delivery of modular homes for Karbon is just one such example. Our long-standing partnership with Karbon has accelerated the delivery of new homes on the site and helped to bring more much needed affordable homes to Darlington. “It has also helped us to retain construction jobs and training opportunities amid the challenges that we have all faced during the last 12 months.”
