Sheffcare acquires new property as part of modernisation programme

SHEFFIELD care home group Sheffcare has confirmed the purchase of a new property in the city as it embarks on an important modernisation programme.

The charity is taking over the currently empty Newfield Nursing Home building in Cat Lane, Heeley, which was previously owned and operated by Palms Row Health Care.

At the same time, Sheffcare will be closing its two nearby Gleadless properties, Paddock Hill and Castelayn.

Residents in both homes will be offered new accommodation in either the Newfield home or at any of the eight other Sheffcare properties across Sheffield.

Sheffcare has no plans to make any redundancies at this stage, nor will will residents be faced with increased costs.

“Our first priority always has to be the comfort and safety of our residents and it is with that in mind that we have made the decision to buy Newfield,” said Sheffcare Chief Executive Claire Rintoul.

“Castelayn and Paddock Hill both date back to the 1960s and are part of an increasingly aged stock inherited by Sheffcare when we took them over from local authority control.

“We have taken the decision to close both sites as Newfield offers all ensuite facilities and a much higher standard of accommodation than we could ever provide at Castelayn and Paddock Hill.

“We know that this announcement may cause some anxiety to our residents and their families but they will be kept fully informed at every stage of the process and we will make the transition as smooth as possible.

“Our ultimate aim is, of course, to make sure that everybody will be able to enjoy the accommodation they want.”

The process of winding down the two homes and opening the new site will begin immediately, with an opening for Newfield planned for October this year.

“Both Castelayn and Paddock Hill have been extremely popular homes through several generations but looking to the future we have to ensure we have properties that are fit for purpose,” said Claire.

“We believe that our Newfield home, with the ensuite rooms that families are now increasingly looking for, will offer the best possible facilities as we move into the future.

“This is an exciting time for us and we hope that our families and friends will join us on this next stage of the Sheffcare story.”
