Poundland announces launch of first 'Local' stores in two Yorkshire towns

A national bargain store chain has announced that it is launching a new convenience store format with two Yorkshire shops.

Poundland, which has 350 stores across the UK, is opening its first two Poundland Local stores in Yorkshire this week.

The Kendray store, opening today (21 May), and the Hornsea store, opening tomorrow (22 May), will collectively employ 24 people.

Poundland Local stores will be smaller than a typical Poundland, and the company says that prices will be “identical” to its larger locations, with no convenience store premium.

The two stores were formerly branches of Fultons Foods, which was acquired by Poundland in summer last year.

Austin Cooke, Poundland’s transformation and retail director, commented: “The launch of Poundland Local is a really exciting development and we hope customers are as excited as we are.

“While our Local format will have the ranges customers would expect in a neighbourhood store, they won’t have to pay more for that doorstep convenience.”
