Huddersfield community organisation nominated for National Diversity Award

Huddersfield-based community organisation Conscious Youth has been nominated for the Community Organisation (Age) Award at The National Diversity Awards 2021 in association with ITV News.

The National Diversity Awards celebrates the achievements of grass- root communities that tackle the issues in today’s society, giving them recognition for their dedication and hard work. Conscious Youth has received nominations in the Community Organisation (Age) category for their work across Kirklees.

Serena Johnson and Sophie Simpson, Co-Founders of Conscious Youth, have been working in the area since 2016 to reach young people in their community and founded the organisation in light of youth services cut back in the local area.

The organisation aims to enhance the emotional and mental resilience of young people through innovative projects which are co-designed and led by young people. The key priorities for Conscious Youth are to address active citizenship and community cohesion. Activities and initiatives created by the organisation include; Youth Central, Conscious Kidz, Conscious Girls, Unified Youth Festival, healthy holidays summer scheme, delivering an early intervention programme, ‘Stepping up and Stepping out’ in schools and colleges and Voices2action.

Conscious Youth currently employs five staff members who are supported by volunteers, a youth committee and an advisory board experienced in social enterprise management and youth and community development.

Commenting on the nomination, Conscious Youth Co-Founder and Director of Operations, Sophie Simpson said: “We’re so honoured to be nominated for the Community Organisation (Age) Award at The National Diversity Awards 2021.

“We’d like to thank everyone in the local community who continuously supports us and all the hard work of our Conscious Youth team. We’d really appreciate further support and nominations in the hope of making the shortlist for the ceremony next year!”
