CACI's GIN-DEX reveals UK's gin hotspots

CACI, the consumer and location intelligence specialist, has revealed the top ten postcodes in the UK for gin drinking as the nation marks World Gin Day on June 12. Leading the country is W9, Maida Vale, in West London. One of the capital’s most affluent boroughs, the area is dominated by the City Sophisticates Acorn Group and has a population twice as likely to drink gin regularly (at least once a week) than the UK average.

Outside London and the South East, the Leeds suburb of LS6 Headingley, with its fun-loving population of Student Life and Career Climber Acorn Groups, has the greatest GIN-DEX, with its residents also twice as likely to get in the spirit of drinking gin as the UK average.

Commenting on the launch of CACI’s GIN-DEX, Paul Nash, Associate Partner at CACI, said: “With pubs open, summer here and June 12 World Gin Day, it felt timely to take a look at gin drinking habits across the UK. Our analysis reveals that gin drinkers are more dominant in urban locations and that it is most favoured among younger Acorn Groups. With strong gin sales and a growing number of gin distilleries in the UK, it seems consumers’ love of gin is here to stay, and the trend is a national one.”

The GIN-DEX was compiled using CACI’s InSite software. It blends a powerful data cocktail of Acorn, CACI’s consumer demographic segmentation, with panel survey results from Kantar to identify the hot spots for regular on trade gin consumption. Regular consumers are those who have responded that they consume gin at least once a week away from home.

CACI’s analysis of the UK’s gin drinking habits follows figures released yesterday by the Wine and Spirit Trade Association[1]. According to their data, 80 million bottles of gin, worth £1.3 billion, were sold last year in shops, supermarkets and online. This is a 30% increase on the previous year. In addition, sales of flavoured gin exceed £500 million for the first time, up by 37% compared to 2019. Despite on trade sales being down 60% by volume and value, total gin sales in the last 12 months exceeded £2 billion.
