Merseyrail and ecoATM launch network of smartphone trade-in kiosks

Merseyrail has teamed up with international re-commerce company, ecoATM, to give customers the opportunity to trade-in used smartphones in return for fast payment straight to their bank accounts.

ecoATM’s kiosks have been installed at Southport, Ormskirk, Liverpool Central, Liverpool Lime Street Lower Level and Moorfields stations, with further locations planned for later in the year. The kiosks provide a convenient and environmentally responsible way for customers to get paid to dispose of their used smartphones.

As highlighted by the United Nations[1], 50 million tonnes of electronic waste (e-waste) are produced around the world every year. However, just 20% of this is formally recycled, resulting in significant growth opportunities for re-commerce providers like ecoATM. Over the last 10 years, the company has helped divert over 28 million devices from landfill and recycled 6.9 million lbs of e-waste.

Launched in the US in 2009, ecoATM has been expanding into Europe since 2018 and now boasts kiosks in 26 cities across the UK.
