£15m contract completed at London landmark by interior specialists

One of the UK’s leading specialist interior fit-out contractors has completed a three-year multi-million pound contract at an iconic London landmark.

EE Smith Contracts, which is based on the Clarendon Industrial Estate in Leicester, has finished a £15 million project at the Battersea Power Station redevelopment.

The Grade II* listed former coal-fired power station is being transformed by a £9 billion project into a thriving new town centre and luxury property development.

It will include villas, apartments and penthouses situated around a garden square, a state-of-the-art events space, large open-plan offices, a hotel and shops, restaurants and cafes.

Working alongside main contractor MACE, staff at EE Smith Contracts fitted out 454 bathrooms in a range of apartments which are priced from £1 million to £3 million.

The East Midlands business worked on the Switch House West and Switch House East areas of the vast development where the lead architect was WilkinsonEyre and the interior architect was the renowned Michaelis Boyd.

Three apprentices were recruited to work on the apartments which feature original brick and steel work from the 1930s as well as new art-deco inspired features.

Jon Relf, project manager at EE Smith Contracts, said from tender to completion, the £15 million project had lasted three years.

“It has been fantastic to see first-hand this iconic London landmark being redeveloped in such stunning fashion,” he said.

“The whole site has been designed to create balance between energy, calm and bringing the Power Station back to life.

“Some of our work features free-standing copper baths with high specification brass sanitaryware, with attention to detail being the key to our success.

“During our time there, we took on apprentices, who learnt on the job and gained valuable experience as well as pride in being involved in such a massive redevelopment.

“We were noticed regularly by MACE for our dedication to health and safety which is important on such a major site as this.

“The first residents have moved into Switch House West to start enjoy living in this riverside destination and it has been a real pleasure to have been involved in such a globally significant development.”

EE Smith Contracts has worked on a number of prominent international hotels in London – including The Londoner, the Grosvenor House, The Langham and The Savoy – along with commercial buildings and super-prime residences.
