Charity book to inspire next generation of construction workers in Dorset

A new children’s charity book has been published, which will teach Dorset youngsters about the importance of construction roles.

“We Can Build” has been written by graduates working at Barratt Homes, and all money raised will go to the Prince’s Trust charity.

Fun and informative, the book aims to tackle the skills shortage in the construction industry, encouraging young people to learn about the built environment from a young age.

Barratt Homes will be making a bulk purchase of the charity to donate to local primary schools and will include them in move-in packs for its younger residents.

Mark Keen, Barratt Homes Construction Director, Southampton Division, hopes the book will inspire the next generation of construction workers.

He said: “Illustrating real professions with fun character profiles will inspire the next generation of architects, quantity surveyors and site managers. I’m extremely proud of our graduates.

“And with all funds going to a charity that supports young people as they enter the world of work, it’s fantastic.”

The Prince’s Trust believes that every young person should have the chance to embrace exciting opportunities. It helps 11- to 30-year-olds find the tools and confidence to take on courses and start careers. Barratt Homes ASPIRE graduates, decided to write “We Can Build” as part of the Prince’s Trust Million Makers challenge.

The innovative entrepreneurial challenge sees teams of employees, from organisations across the UK, competing to raise as much as possible from an initial seed funding investment.

The book, “We can Build”, includes modern and relevant issues addressed at an appropriate level for the target age group of KS1. Diverse character profiles and messages on sustainability are interwoven into each page.

Barratt Homes’ ASPIRE Programme is a two-year programme open to graduates of all disciplines. Participants will explore the housebuilder’s business and their own talents.
