Local housebuilder granted planning approval for first of three new developments in Newcastle

Five star housebuilder, Barratt Developments North East has been granted planning approval for the first of three new housing developments in Newcastle.

Responding to the growing demand for high quality new homes, Barratt’s major plans will see over 500 new houses built across the city, which will be supported by an investment of over £54 million into local communities.

The largest of the three developments and first to have been granted planning consent from Newcastle City Council is a site at Meadow Hill in Throckley, which will comprise 308 new homes.

Subject to planning consent, a further 140 properties will be built in Gosforth and 72 in Walkergate. The three developments collectively will see the housebuilder deliver 520 new homes and support over 1,300 jobs, with each site offering a variety of properties to suit people at all stages of the housing ladder.

Of the proposed new homes, a number will be built to the government’s accessible and adaptable standards to meet the needs of the ageing population, while further affordable housing options will also be available at each development.

If approved, Barratt Developments will also pledge over £1 million to the enhancement of community amenities and local healthcare provisions.

Barratt Developments’ plans for Newcastle form part of a wider investment in the delivery of new homes for the North East over the next 12 months. Planning approval has already been granted for a 243 home development in Wynyard, with further developments in Hebburn and Ryhope set to bring more than 330 additional homes to the wider region.

Carl Sobolewski, Managing Director at Barratt Developments North East said: “Our plans represent a major investment for Newcastle and reflect our ongoing commitment to the wider region.

“Like many cities around the country, Newcastle will see huge demand for new homes over the coming years and we’re eager to work closely with Newcastle City Council to help to fulfil these needs as well as enhancing vital local amenities.”
