Morgan Sindall Construction returns to University of Huddersfield Campus to build new Faith Centre

Morgan Sindall Construction has been appointed by the University of Huddersfield to build a new Faith Centre, marking the latest stage of the contractor’s work on the Yorkshire university’s estate.

The 1,000 sq m. two storey Faith Centre will provide a community space, congregational hall, separate male and female Muslim prayer rooms, Christian and multi-faith room, separate male and female Wudu rooms and a Chaplain’s office.

Additionally, the Faith Centre – which will meet the global WELL standard - will also incorporate learning and support areas, an equipment store, and accessible male and female toilets.

External remodelling will also see existing road networks be pedestrianised, enabling the £4.5m Faith Centre to serve as a focal point of the campus.

The build programme will be overseen by project director James Garnett and is set to complete in autumn 2022. It is the latest collaboration between Morgan Sindall Construction and the University, following the completion of the Barbara Hepworth Building in 2019 and the Oastler Building in 2017.

Additional projects Morgan Sindall Construction has worked on for the university include the MIAMI-2 facility, The Institute of Railway Research and the renovation of a Grade II-listed former bath house into an attractive and unusual gallery-cum-coffee house and restaurant.

Steve Barrett, project manager for Morgan Sindall Construction, said: “We’re very proud of our work over recent years with the University of Huddersfield, creating one of the most visually stunning learning facilities in the country with the Barbara Hepworth Building.

“Students are unable to reach their learning potential without fulfilling their needs outside of the lecture hall, library or lab. It’s therefore a privilege for Morgan Sindall Construction to work with the University in delivering this new Faith Centre, which will be a welcoming place for prayer and reflection for students and staff of all faiths.”

Professor Tim Thornton, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, University of Huddersfield, said: “We are very excited to be working with Morgan Sindall Construction on this latest development on campus, which will provide a brand-new Faith Centre right at the heart of campus. The new centre will continue to provide a multi-faith community for students and staff to pray, relax and socialise in. This purpose-built facility will be set in a modern and attractive new building which will meet the global WELL standard, supporting the University’s drive towards wellbeing and sustainability for our students, staff, faith advisers and chaplains to enjoy.”
