Barratt Homes challenges local school children to share top tips for energy savings

Local housebuilder, Barratt Homes Yorkshire East challenged the children of Micklefield Primary School to design a poster showing the energy saving steps they are taking when learning from home.

Years 4, 5 and 6 pupils from the school, which is located close to the housebuilder’s Drovers Court development on Great North Road, were provided with some helpful advice from Barratt Developments’ own energy saving experts before being asked to share their own in the form of a poster.

The posters sent in by the children captured their tips showing different ways to save energy, from turning off your Nintendo Switch, to turning taps off when they’re not in use, but the chosen winner, judged by the Barratt Homes team, was a wonderful drawing by Lucy, winning a £30 Amazon voucher.

In second place, winning a £20 Amazon voucher was Bethany’s drawing, and Lola and their creative and colouring image of tips coming in third winning a £10 voucher.

The activity took place for Big Energy Saving Week; a national campaign to help people cut their fuel bills and get all the financial support they are entitled to, as January is traditionally a tough month when it comes to energy bills. The initiative sits in tandem with In addition to this, energy saving is integral to Barratt Developments’ own energy savings targets, with the housebuilder committed to purchasing 100% of its operational electricity from renewable sources by 2025. Just under half of the electricity it already purchases is from renewables and achieving the new 100% target will help it to reduce emissions by a further 3,300 tonnes of carbon.

Leonna Hardcastle, Sales Manager at Barratt Homes Drovers Court development, said: “It’s very important for us to connect with the communities around us, especially when it comes to supporting local schools with educational resources. It was great to give the children from Micklefield Primary School the chance to use their creativity and learn about energy saving, with the added incentive of winning a voucher of their choice. We’re looking forward to continuing our relationship with the school and children and hope to work with them on more exciting and rewarding activities in the future.”

Emma Cook, Headteacher of Micklefield Primary School, added: “Our Big Energy Saving Week activity provided a great opportunity for the children to learn more about energy saving whilst they are learning from home and generally spending more time at home. They were able to get creative and were all very excited about the prospect of winning a voucher! We hope to develop our relationship with Barratt Developments in the future, and we’re excited for any other possible opportunities with them.”
